This depiction of the city of Épinal represents an important iconographic testament to the urban layout of the era. Although unsigned, the painting is attributed to Nicolas Bellot, a painter from Épinal and the creator of a panoramic map of the city made around the same time. Painted from the perspective of the current watercourse (formerly the Poux prairies), the piece offers a panoramic view of the Moselle River and the two banks of the city, which are linked by a wooden bridge (today’s Sadi Carnot Bridge). The Saint-Lazare hospital appears on the right bank, on the tip of the badge formed by the river, in the same place as this museum stands today. The towers framing the “smaller city” (Rualménil) hint at the Boudiou or Aubert gates. On the other side, fortifications frame the “greater city”, showing the tower of Saint-Maurice Church. The bridge in the background corresponds to the current bridge of the 170th Infantry Regiment, which is overlooked by the current Court of Justice. The people strolling and fishing in the foreground bring the scene to life.
