In this drawing, the man is portrayed in a comical manner, his arms laden with shrubs which are intended to be gifts for his wife. This amusing scene captures middle-class love, ; which became very fashionable in the nineteenth century. Although marriages of convenience still existed, they became less frequent. The relationships between couples became more intimate; this was encouraged by the development of personal apartments, away from the extended family circle. This enabled ; couples to establish a relationship and a family unit which was more private, resulting in an environment which was more favourable to feelings.
