With his Auto-filmages (self-filmed moments) from 1987 onwards and Small Optical Theatres post-1995, Pierrick Sorin creates tragi-comic playlets in which he adopts burlesque roles to express the quintessential meaninglessness of life using appealing absurd and poetic stories which betray the influence of Alfred Jarry and Buster Keaton. Sorin’s holographic montages, which use images reflected in a semi-opaque mirror so that they move in a set decorated with models, display an inventiveness worthy of Méliès. As a video and visual artist in tune with his times, he shares his contemporary Jean-Luc Godard’s jaundiced view of introspection and of the power of art to bring about renewal. ; Nantes-born artist Pierrick Sorin is France’s best-known video artist. He studied at the Nantes School of Fine Art from 1983 to 1988, having been a film and video aficionado since the age of fourteen. His aim is to express in visual form his ideas relating to making images in daily life and the uncertain relationship between illusion and reality, thus giving a physical shape to his dreams.
