Due to its small size, this painting immerses the viewer in an intimate atmosphere. Although the figures are semi-naked, the scene is still peaceful and restrained. The young woman does not assume an improper or erotic position, as often happens when an artist explores the theme of a woman observed while asleep: with a serene expression, she modestly leans on her elbows. The moving hand of her lover is suspended above the sleeping beauty’s body. The restraint and smooth technique of this painting reject the baroque fantasy of the period and presage the sobriety and purity of Neoclassicism.
