In this scene, a man with piercing eyes seems to be questioning a naked couple, watched closely by a group of people hanging on his every word. Each person’s role is indicated by their hand gestures. The central figure is an astrologer, identifiable by his star-spangled cloak, who is swinging one finger like a pendulum. The seated man is looking at the woman beside him, waiting passively for a response with his hands clasped. His female companion has a finger to her mouth, indicating hesitation.
This engraving is one of a series of sixty-five produced by Picasso between 6 November and 19 December 1966. It provides an insight into the illustrated book The Magnificent Cuckold, a play by Fernand Crommelink dating from 1920-1921. The book was printed in the print studio of the playwright’s son in Mougins in 1968. This proof on Vélin de Rives paper is number five of fifty and is signed with a stamp imitating Picasso’s signature. It was printed between 1975 and 1977. Engraving was a major feature of Picasso’s art and is particularly distinctive due to the wide range of techniques used (etching, aquatint, drypoint).
