Posy holders were a decorative women’s accessory used to carry a few flowers. The little hoop at the tip was connected by a fine chain to a ring worn over the finger. The flowers were held together with a pin which was attached to the posy holder. They appeared in France in the 17th century and were used until the late 19th century. Posy holders were often combined with a dance card or fan and allowed the user to hold these items in one hand, leaving the other arm free for their dance partner.
